British composer Sir Arthur Edward Drummond Bliss is largely forgotten today. In his own day, however, he not only served as Music Director of the BBC, but he was also awarded the prestigious post of Master of the Queen’s Music, an honor he held until his death in 1975.

The String Quartet in A Major, composed in 1914, is broadly romantic. In that same year, just before the onset of World War I, Bliss was studying composition at the Royal College of Music under Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, immersing himself in the English Romantic tradition. It seems he also found some inspiration in the Impressionists; shades of the colors found in works by Debussy and Ravel can be heard in this string quartet as well.
