Ratings & Reviews
Good, but a little too high
This very light shoulder rest has a good shape in my opinion, it's quite flat (I'm not a big fan of mach one rests...) I have used it for two years before going restless. But, as another user has written, even at the lowest possible it's quite high so I have trimmed the endpieces to make it lower. I find it much better this way.
Kun Rocks
Ever since I played a violin I been using a Kun Super but even tho I don't have a short neck I always want a higher rest just because I like it up there. I tried a wolf but didn't like it to much. Then when I saw this carbon fiber rest I thought it would be low like all Kun rest but it's lowest setting is almost as high as a regular kun rest. This thing goes so high and I love it. Plus it sounds really nice.
My New Favorite
I have tried many brands and types of shoulder rest for violin over the years and have found the Kun brand the most comfortable and secure. When the Kun standard came out, it became my favorite. Then, the Kun Bravo came along and took my heart. It functioned about the same as the standard, but the wood model was just too cool. When the carbon fiber Voce came out, I was a bit put off by the price, but decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. It is light, secure on the instrument, fits my shoulder wonderfully, and as a result I hold the violin securely with little fatigue. My teacher tried it and he has converted to the Voce. I predict it's use will spread through the orchestra the way Evah Pirazzi strings did. I own several violins and really appreciate the ease in which the Voce adjusts to different widths of instrument. Summary: I love it.
A step up from the standard Kun
Shoulder rests are a very personal thing so your mileage may vary, but I've used this shoulder rest for around 8 years and it works well for me. I got it originally because I kept having issues with the Kun Standard and similar rests collapsing on my main violin (something about the edges; this was not an issue on my other instruments). I tried several similar rests and found the extended-length feet on this one kept it on my violin better than the others. I can't say I've noticed any tone benefit from the lighter carbon fiber body but it's a good, solid rest, very adjustable.
Too High..and not very comfortable....
I tried this S/R and really is not very comfortable. It hurts....too high... I returned the item. And as always Shar Music was great!..easy return process. Thank you!
Try it backwards before you give up!
This shoulder rest is very interesting. It feels extremely high when it is in what is usually the normal position, with the lower area toward the shoulder, and the higher end toward the chest. But if you put it backwards, it is amazingly comfortable. My ten year old daughter discovered this when she put it on backwards accidentally. So now I am ordering a second voce, because she made off with mine. This setup is very ergonomic for center-mount chinrests. A particularly nice feature of the shoulder rest is that it is incredibly stable, because of the lateral play on the arms. Other shoulder rests always seem to fall off because they don't accommodate lateral torque.
Excellent, lightweight, and superb Kun customer service
First, I posted a review of the Kun Voce recently, stating that I'd had problems with popping noise as the plastic components rubbed against each other (I'd used the Voce for a few years). After posting the review, i notified Kun of the problem I'd encountered. The very next day i received an email from Marina Kun, President of Kun, indicating that they'd noticed this problem and had fixed it, and offering to send me a new-production Voce shoulder rest. All the Kun staff with whom I had contact were very concerned about the problem and eager to satisfy this customer. I received my replacement within a few days, and did not even have to return the old shoulder rest. Customer service doesn't get any better than this! The new version is quiet - no noise problem as before, and Kun's customer service was extremely responsive and fast. the Voce is infinitely adjustable for your particular bout, and the carbon-fiber construction makes it very lightweight. I like the fact that the supports fold, so the rest fits easily into a standard violin-case storage compartment. I'd recommend the Voce and Kun customer service, in particular without hesitation.
Not very sturdy.
I threw mine in the garbage after the plastic foot adjuster broke off. Way overpriced.
Question:
Do you have this shoulder rest for Viola?
Noisy....
First, I own several other Kun shoulder rests - original and folding, and like them. I've used the carbon fiber model on a practice/rehearsal instrument for a few years now, and while I like the fit & feel & weight, I find that the plastic parts make a popping sound when I place the instrument on my shoulder or when the instrument is shifted around slightly. I wouldn't use this shoulder rest for a concert! My best guess is that this noise is generated where the plastic parts rub against each other; without some sort of lubrication - dry silicone? - the plastic binds, then gives way (something like little tectonic plates). Perhaps some Teflon washers or Teflon parts would solve this problem at the manufacturing stage. Unfortunately, the noise is transmitted to the instrument, even with rubber feet on the shoulder rest - amplifying the problem.
Great investment!
At first it was slightly uncomfortable, but after playing with it for a few days I got used to it. Extremely comfortable and light. I have had mine for 2 years and it is still in great shape, its a great investment in my opinion!
too high
I bought this expensive shoulder rest when the KUN I had played with for 20 years broke. I believe that I have a normal frame, but this should rest even when set at the LOWEST position available is very high. It is very uncomfortable and I cannot play with it. I did try turning it around, but that does not work either. Additionally, it is too large to fit in my Musafia case, the case wont close. All in all - a waste of money, I will have to return it.
