A Very Good Mute

This mute is a very good mute. It is easy to slide on and off. The only pad this is that the sound isn't as muted as some mutes.

Cool but not so good.

After purchasing this item on sharmusic I recieved it 6 days after purchase. Upon recieving the mute i quickly went to test it on my violin. When the mute is in place on top of the bridge it doesnt mute as well as other brands and styles you can find on shar. When not in place and idle on the strings, whenever i play or pluck an open G it tends to rattle a little bit. Althought this item is cool looking, it doesnt do the best job a mute can do. Only get it if you want it for looks. As it does not do a good job muting.

Effective for tone (not volume). Does not rattle behind the bridge.

This is the perfect mute for a concertmaster or chamber soloist. It "mutes" the tone while creating just a slight reduction in volume. For a piece like the Opus 26 Brahms Piano Quartet (slow movement), in which strings play 'Forte' while muted against LOUD Piano runs - this fills the hall, and competes with the piano. It is easy to slide up and down, and it doesn't rattle while disengaged. My highest recommendation, this is the one I give to other musicians when they forgot to bring one. But If you "need it" to merely play more softly, then this is not the one for you. (Or: maybe some changes in bow contact point, pressure, and speed might help you to play more softly.)

Great for jams, but does not mute like a practice mute!

I've been using a large rubber practice mute, which I really like for practicing at home to not disturb my husband, but I wanted something unobtrusive to use for my loud fiddle at jams. This is exactly what I needed. It "takes the edge off" and really improves the tone of the fiddle, without lowing the volume as much as my practice mute. If you just need a slight reduction in volume, you can't beat this mute, and the price is certainly right. You just slide it up so the "lip" sits on the bridge, and you're good to go.

THIS IS A CONCERT MUTE

I've seen a lot of comments about this mute not doing a great job of making the violin quieter. This is a concert mute, it is meant to slightly alter the tone of the violin for passages in orchestral pieces. If you are looking for a mute that makes your instrument quite, look for a "practice mute", they are large and fit over your bridge and will dampen the sound

Not effective

I purchased several mutes, including the Specter, looking for a mute to soften my loud Lamberti Master Series violin without the extreme "under water sound effect" of the full practice mute. I have only been playing for 12 weeks. Although this mute was the easiest to apply/slide up and down the strings, neither I nor my teacher could hear any change to my violin's sound.

Very Easy to Use!

This mute has definitely saved me with it's quick application time. I am easily able to reach up and slide it on to the bridge. It maybe doesn't sound AS muted as the classic black mute, but I enjoy it much better.

A Good Mute

I've used this mute for years and love it. It almost never leaves my instrument. I've used this mute in solo, chamber music, and orchestral settings and have never had a problem with it. It is very easy to use as it does just slide on and off the bridge which has been very helpful when I've had a split second to take it off. (Unlike the Tourte mute that I had previously used which I sometimes would pull off the instrument if I was in a hurry.) I like this mute mainly because of it allows me economy of motion. One swipe of my index finger and it's on; one swipe again and it's off. It also mutes the sound enough to change the tone color, which is the main thing needed for mutes.
